Rights and responsibilities

Responsibilities everyone shares

Living in the UK brings duties as well as rights. People are expected to obey the law and respect the rights of others. They should treat others fairly and with equal respect, whatever their sex, race, religion, age, disability, class or sexual orientation. They should look after themselves and their family, work to support them where they can, help people in their community and care for the environment. Voting is not compulsory, but taking part in elections is encouraged.

Duties set by law

Some responsibilities are legal duties, not just good manners. You must obey the law and pay the tax you owe. If you receive a jury summons, you must reply and attend unless the court excuses you. Other things are your own choice. Voting, joining a party, volunteering and giving blood are all voluntary, and nobody can be punished for not doing them.
